"MANIFESTO OF WORLD DOWN SYNDROME

" Because we have rights "

Good afternoon.

Today is World Down Syndrome, a genetic disorder that occurs in one in 1300 people born in Spain, occurs in all countries.

This day is very important for the 34,000 people with Down syndrome who live in our country and we are proud that this Congress, all English, we have opened their doors to speak as citizens with full rights.

I am a person with Down syndrome and I can not hide it, but not ashamed of it. Not prevent me from living my life. I just want to accept me as I am, a young, sincere, courageous, hardworking, responsible and good person. Having Down syndrome is not a lot, but it is a disgrace. We are different but not inferior. We can be ourselves, be happy, loving and being loved, and be useful for us and for our society.

I take this day and this place for our voice heard. I ask to be a citizen, with rights and also with their obligations. We want to let us make our own decisions and you support us when needed.

We understand that we have rights and that many are violated. Until recently we did not know. Do not want to be different, we have the right to do the same things as everyone else. The International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities says so. And in Spain we want to apply now. We

that we recognize our capabilities. Also by judges and courts. We were not unfit or that we are seen as second class citizens. We are one more and we want to be treated like everyone, that no discrimination when we go to a shop or to enjoy our leisure time.

We want to study with our peers with and without disabilities, not to get us out of the ordinary classroom. We want a job and earn a living like everyone else.

We want to be allowed to have a full emotional life and that goes beyond sexuality. We live as independently as possible, choosing the site and the person who lives with us.

A society has trouble understanding that we have desires, dreams and goals as other people. When you have the opportunity to speak with someone and I ask him about their desires, their projects, their objectives ... you will see that we share similar dreams ....

Today is World Down Syndrome. We raise our voice to say that we live our lives because we can, because we want, and because we have the right to do so. Thanks
